Your trip on your phone

To use your trip during the journey, export it to a map app on your phone. Two free apps based on OpenStreetMap work well, on Android and iPhone:

  • Organic Maps: simple, and Otripy's groups become separate lists. Recommended.
  • OsmAnd: more features, for hikers and cyclists especially.

Both work without an Internet connection once the map of the country is downloaded, find your way to each place, and show your notes.

Exporting the trip

In Otripy, choose File → Export for Phone…, then:

  1. The format: KMZ for Organic Maps, or GPX for OsmAnd and other apps.
  2. Whether to include the routes between places: they are added by selecting a place, then Shift-clicking another (see routes).
  3. Where to save the file: Save to File…, or Save to Nextcloud… to find it in the Nextcloud app of your phone.

The export contains your locations with their titles, notes and colors, the trip notes and the notes of groups, and the routes. Images are not exported: map apps do not show them.

With Organic Maps

  1. Install Organic Maps from your app store.
  2. Before leaving, while you have Wi-Fi: open the map where you travel, Organic Maps offers to download it. Download every region of the trip.
  3. Get the .kmz file on the phone: open it from the Nextcloud app, from an email or a messaging app, or from your phone's files.
  4. Tap the file and choose Open with Organic Maps (Android) or the share button then Organic Maps (iPhone).
  5. Organic Maps adds one bookmark list for the trip, and one for each group, such as "Ireland – Day 1". Find them under the star button, Bookmarks and Tracks; each list can be shown or hidden.

Tap a bookmark to read its note, and Route to to be guided to it. Routes exported from Otripy appear as tracks in the list of their first place.

With OsmAnd

  1. Install OsmAnd and download the maps of the countries you visit (Menu → Maps & Resources).
  2. Get the .gpx file on the phone, as above, and open it with OsmAnd.
  3. The locations appear as waypoints, grouped by Otripy group, and each route as a track. They are in My Places → Tracks.

After changing the trip

The phone gets a copy: changes made in Otripy afterwards are not sent to it. Export the trip again, and import the new file. In Organic Maps, delete the trip's previous lists first, so that they are not shown twice.
